 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Trianon. On this occasion the Hungarian National Museum presents various art and cultural treasures from the territories annexed from Hungary in a photo exhibition. The exhibition, originally designed as a picture gallery on the fences of the Hungarian National Museum, itself a symbol of national unity, will be opened this autumn due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mahatma Gandhi

Born on 2 October 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi took the name Mahatma Gandhi and become not only the ‘Father of the Nation’ in modern India but one of the most famous politicians inspiring millions around the world.

In honour of the 150th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, the Government of India embarked on a series of celebratory commemorations in 2018, which ended on 2 October 2020, the 151st anniversary of Gandhi’s birthday.

In disguise

The Portrait Collection of the Historical Photo Department of the Hungarian National Museum stores pictures of characters from political, economical and cultural life. This means more than 40,000 photographs depicting more than 15,000 persons. These pictures are works of professional, amateur or private photographers. They were taken at studios or at events.

A COUNTRY FOR WOMEN?

At the dawn of the Middle Ages, in a period when peoples of various origin and cultural background succeded each other in the Carpathian Basin, written sources mainly inform us about the world of men and warfare, while women mostly stay ‘invisible'. However, from an archaeological point of view it is exactly women's graves which are more spectacular, richer and more colourful than those of men.

Not only new sites were brought to light during our excavations, but we also gained special insight into facets of our ancestors' lives spanning several centuries.

John Sadovy’s Photographs of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution

John Sadovy (1925–2010), a Czech-born photojournalist reporting for the American illustrated weekly Life, witnessed and photographed events of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution for four days, from 29 October to 1 November 1956. His pictures from that time, mainly the ones taken during the siege of the headquarters of the Budapest Committee of the Hungarian Working People’s Party at Köztársaság Square (today Pope John Paul II Square), gained worldwide fame on the pages of Life and other important international publications.
