Hungary's oldest and largest historical photography collection dates back more than a hundred years. Direct predecessors of the collection of the Historical Photo Department were the photography collection of the Historical Picture Gallery and that of the Modern History Museum. The Historical Photo Department has been an independent department of the Hungarian National Museum since 1995, and has been located in the central building since 1997. It currently houses a total of more than 1 million photographs, of which almost 300 thousand are individually registered, the rest in chronological and/or thematic organization. The collection's artefacts can be researched and, thanks to continuous digitization, more and more are available in the National Museum's online database.
