The Coins Collection of the Hungarian National Museum was established in 1802. The approximately 2,500-piece collection of the museum’s founder, Count Ferenc Széchényi forms its basis, consisting primarily of Hungarian and Transylvanian coins. Over the past two centuries, the holdings of the Coins Collection have expanded through purchases, donations, bequests, and coin hoards recovered from the ground. Today, the collection preserves more than 300,000 individually registered objects. Although the collection has a universal scope, its primary focus is on Hungarian coins and objects of Hungarian relevance, as well as coin hoards discovered within the territory of Hungary.
The Coins Collection is not open to the general public. Selected items from the holdings are on display in the permanent historical exhibition of the Hungarian National Museum and in various temporary exhibitions.
