József Eötvös | The writer, the politician and the political thinker

József Eötvös, writer, poet, politician, minister of religion and public education in the Batthyány government of 1848 and the Andrássy government of 1867, president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the initiator of compulsory education and compulsory schooling in Hungary, died 150 years ago this year, on 2 February 1871. To mark this occasion, his bones will be reburied in a solemn church ceremony on 6 November 2021 in the Eötvös-Szapáry Chapel in Ercsi, where he was buried in his previously destroyed original burial place. With this virtual exhibition, the Hungarian National Museum wishes to commemorate Baron József Eötvös, a politician and writer of lasting importance.
