The coronation mantle

One of the most valuable pieces of our Museum is the ceremonial robe once worn by Hungarian kings at their coronations. According to the Latin inscription on the garment, it had been donated to the Basilica of Székesfehérvár by our fist king Saint Stephen I and his wife Giselle in 1031.

A COUNTRY FOR WOMEN?

At the dawn of the Middle Ages, in a period when peoples of various origin and cultural background succeded each other in the Carpathian Basin, written sources mainly inform us about the world of men and warfare, while women mostly stay ‘invisible'. However, from an archaeological point of view it is exactly women's graves which are more spectacular, richer and more colourful than those of men.

Széchényi Hall

The Hall named after Count Ferenc Széchényi, who founded the Hungarian National Museum in 1802, was established on the initiative of Mrs. Jánosné Bohus Antónia Szőgyén in 1859, who appealed to Hungarian women to raise funds for the construction of an auditorium in memory of Ferenc Széchényi. The 27,579 forints collected through the county and city committees of lady patriots were handed over to Director Ferenc Kubinyi for the construction of a representative hall cherishing the memory of Ferenc Széchényi.

OPEN REPOSITORY

Glass, porcelain and ceramic objects of the Modern Department, as well as a smaller unit containing pharmacy jars, can be seen in the repository, which is open to the public, on the lower level.  The hall bears the name of Ágoston Kubinyi, the former scholarly director of the museum (1843–1869). Its ground floor furniture was made in the 1860s at the same time as the Széchényi Hall, and the upstairs part in 1907.
