Medieval Lapidary

The medieval lapidary is located on the ground floor of the museum, in the lower rotunda, the cafeteria and the adjoining rooms, which visitors can access by descending a spiral staircase. Here they can get a glimpse into the world of stone relics from the 12th and 17th centuries in Hungary. Descending the staircase on the right, there are stone monuments of the ecclesiastical centres supported by the House of Árpád, Esztergom, Székesfehérvár and Dömös, while in the other side rooms of the rotunda, there are gravestones of Hungarian and foreign origin: Italian, German, Slavic and Jewish; some of knights and some of civilians, followed by some Turkish tombstones with turbans and a few items of the bell collection. In the rotunda and the cafeteria, visitors can relax among architectural monuments, especially the carvings of the churches of Székesfehérvár and Dömös, and the replicas of the coat of arms of Hunyadi Castle in Vajdahunyad, while contemplating the turbulent centuries of Hungarian history.
