It has been 7 years that a brutal war destroys Syria. Its Christian community not long ago numbered more than 2 million souls. By now hardly more than 400 thousand could stay in the country. In the ancient Christian district of East Damascus children die on a daily basis due to the mortar shells that target them from the outskirts occupied by jihadist rebels. In the darkness of suffering, Melkite Father Naim Gharbi is planning to organise a summer camp for the children and disabled belonging to the community of the Greek Catholic Parish of the Patriarchate.
The camp will take place in a safe zone inside Syria. Its aim is to help the children get back their childhood at least for some days, to forget about the horrors of the war and make them stronger in facing the upcoming challenges. About the details of the camp and about the community you can read in the longer version of this call. The available financial resources are very limited therefore any contribution offered is gratefully welcome. Those who feel concerned please transfer your donation to the account of the Hungarian Mothers’ Association 11704007 – 22038003 – 00000000 under the title: Children of Damascus. The donation will be handed over in one sum to the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarchate in Damascus.
“I hope that life will come back as beautiful as before, to find us all as one family, friends, brothers and sisters, and I hope for that to happen that this war will stop.”
Dr. Bianka Speidl, appointed curator by the Hungarian Mothers’ Association, Senior Researcher at the Migration Research Institute, Budapest.
Thank you for your care and compassion.
