Department of Archaeology

The main task of the Department of Archaeology, which was formed in 2004 through the amalgamation of the Archaeology Department and the Middle Ages Department, is the scientific investigation of archaeological finds made on the territory of Hungary. During the period from its foundation in 1802 until the signing of the Trianon Peace Treaty in 1920, the Hungarian National Museum collected finds from across the whole of historical Hungary, which was larger than modern-day Hungary. This is why its collections today contain artefacts from places that are now in neighbouring countries. Since the 1950s, a find from an archaeological excavation in Hungary has generally passed to the museum for the area in which the find was made. Nevertheless, by conducting excavations of outstanding significance nationally (Vértesszőlős, Kölked-Feketekapu, Heténypuszta, Zalavár, Doboz, Feldebrő, Gyula Castle, etc.), the Archaeology Division and the Middle Ages Division continued to retain their importance professionally, by way of the finds lodged with them. In addition to performing their scientific work, the researchers at today’s Department of Archaeology take part in university teaching and in the organisation of scientific life.
