Welcome to the Main Building of Hungarian National Museum Public Collection Centre Hungarian National Museum.
Please be informed that by entering the museum you accept the rules set out in the House Rules and that you ought to follow and observe the instructions, possible restrictions and warnings communicated by the staff and security services of the institution.
You may visit the museum's exhibition halls, current exhibitions and events are at your own risk.
The museum is a cultural institution and a building under monument protection, we request that we preserve our treasures together.
GENERAL RULES OF CONDUCT
- The museum is not open to persons under the influence of alcohol or intoxicated, or to persons who are conspicuously scruffy, inadequately or inappropriately dressed (e.g. in a bathing suit, with naked upper body, barefoot). If the visitor's appearance (inadequate clothing, conspicuous scruffiness etc.) disturbs other visitors, museum staff may request that the affecter visitor leave the building.
- No one may enter the exhibition areas in wet clothing. Wet umbrellas can be deposited in the umbrella holders at the entrance or in one of the downstairs cloakrooms. Umbrellas left in the lobby are not guarded and the museum is not responsible for them. Umbrellas are not allowed in the exhibition areas.
- It is forbidden to behave in a manner that endangers the safety of visitors or participants in events, or the property of the museum, or that is disrupting or offending the public order or morals.
- The use of mobile telephones and loud talking in the exhibition area is not permitted. Please mute your mobile phone in the exhibition areas and do not use it for conversation during your visit.
- It is prohibited to damage the exhibits, run around and use the stairs improperly in the exhibition area.
- Everyone ought to use the museum premises for their intended purpose, to keep the environment in good order and to take care of the equipment and facilities in the building and the building itself.
- It is forbidden to touch artefacts and display cases. In the exhibition spaces, several objects are visible in full vicinity, without a cordon in front of them. These objects are either surrounded by a red frame on the ground or are placed on a platform. These objects may not be touched. Only specially marked copies of objects for demonstration purposes may be patted.
- No littering is allowed. Waste may be deposited only in the waste containers provided.
- The provision of commercial services (including any kind of sales, ticket sales, services, advertising, fundraising, signature collection) on the museum premises (including the area of outdoor events, including the Museum Garden) is only allowed with the prior written permission of the Director General of the Museum and only to persons having entered in a legal relationship with the Museum for this purpose, in the place and manner specified in the permit. Any programme may be organised in the building of the Museum and in the Museum Garden, as well as in connection with the Museum, by the Museum and its qualified employees, using the personal and material resources of the Museum, in accordance with the requirements of responsible management of state property. The Museum coordinates the programmes taking place on the Museum's premises exclusively within its own competence.
- With the exception of the consumption of products purchased in the museum cafeteria, the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the Museum premises is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate exclusion from the Museum.
- For the comfort of the visitors, mobile chairs are available in the Museum. These chairs are free of charge and are provided to allow visitors to rest in the exchibition areas when they feel the need to do so. There is no age restriction for the use of the chairs. The mobile chairs are placed on stands, which are located on the first and second floor. The museum chairs can be carried on the shoulders, or they can be used as walking aids if necessary. The chairs may only be used for their intended purpose. We request that you return the mobile chairs to its stand after use.
- Fetch and consumption of food and drink in the exhibition spaces is strictly prohibited. They may be placed in the cloakrooms or in the storage lockers before entering the exhibitions.
RULES FOR VISITING
- Opening hours: The Museum is open on Tuesday-Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 pm. The museum is closed on Mondays. Other opening hours are announced on our website mnm.hu. Please note that the ticket office closes at 17:00. Tickets for the museum exhibitions can be purchased until 17:00. Closing of the exhibitions starts at 5.30 and the building is closed at 6:00 p.m.. We reserve the right to change opening hours.
- Closing procedure: We request that you leave the museum before the closing time.
- Guided tour: To book a guided tour, please email tarlatv@mnm.hu. Guided tours are only available on the Museum's premises and are conducted by trained museum guides.
- Restrictions: due to fire-protection, epidemiological and other legal requirements, admission to both indoor and outdoor events may be limited. Admission to and participation in (free admission) events may be subject to the use of wristbands or other means of crowd control. If the number of admissions or event participants (together: visitors) exceeds the permitted number, visitors who are asked to leave by a museum staff member or security guard must leave the event site.
The Museum may only be visited in compliance with the Fire Protection Regulations of the Museum then in force.
VISITING WITH SMALL CHILDREN
- Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
- The museum welcomes under-age visitors, but for reasons of personal safety and the safety of artefacts, the following rules must be observed. Children under the age of two must be carried in a pushchair or a front carrier. Museum programs organiezed for children are exempted from this requirement. Pushchairs may only be pushed, i may not be carried folded in the hand. Carrying infants of any age on the neck or back is not permitted for safety reasons.
Baby changing facilities are located on the ground floor (next to the café) and the mezzanine between the first and second floor, in the women’s restroom. Please ask our staff for assistance in using it.
GROUP AND FAMILY VISITS, MUSEUM EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES
- It is the responsibility of the group leader, accompanying teacher or parent to ensure that all members of their group or family comply with the House Rules.
- In the case of groups of children, it is the responsibility of the group leader to ensure that the number of adult companions is appropriate when compared to the number of children. The leader of the children's group is responsible for the adherence to the House Rules and the safety of the children's group.

Why are they not allowed to touch the display cases and objects?
The greasy layer on our hands and skin leaves a mark on the display case and, when it gets on the objects, it starts irreversible processes, for example, it can cause metal to rust.
- The Museum offers educational programmes for pre-school/school groups with adult companions.
- The adult companions of the kindergarten/school groups are responsible for the behaviour of children and accompanying adults, regardless of their age, during the museum educational programmes. It is the duty and responsibility of the adult companion to familiarise the children with the rules of conduct set out by the museum educator before the commencement of the museum educational activities and to ensure that the children comply with the same during the museum visit.
- The provisions of the Civil Code shall apply to the liability of the participants in the museum educational activities vis-à-vis the Museum and to cthe reimbursement of any damage caused by them.
ACCESSIBILITY
The accessible entrance is located on the left side of the Museum, which can be approached through the staff gate on Bródy Sándor Street, from where our staff will help you to find your way around the building. There is also a disabled lavatory along the route. We offer tactile objects for the blind and visually impaired in the entire permanent exhibition of the Museum.
BRINGING IN OBJECTS
- Animals (except guide dogs), plants, weapons or objects that look like weapons, stabbing and cutting tools, other objects or materials dangerous to life, limb, health or the works of art, umbrellas, raincoats and large children's toys (e.g. small motorbikes, running bikes, scooters, electric children's vehicles, balloons, etc.) are not allowed in the exhibition areas. It is also forbidden to bring into the exhibition areas any object of such a size that disturbs other visitors or blocks an escape route. Please note that we are unable to store large objects such as scooters, skateboards, suitcases, etc. Suitcases can be stored in the cloakroom, regardless of the size of them, for an entrance fee.
- It is strictly forbidden to bring food and drink into the exhibition areas and to consume them. Please inform our staff if you have a health-related reasons to do so. The cafeteria is located on the ground floor, where you can eat the food you have brought in, there is no compulsory consumption.
- It is forbidden to bring flammable and explosive materials into and around the museum building. In the event that the automatic fire alarm system is triggered by a visitor's behaviour in violation of the law or these Rules (e.g. smoking, causing a fire, unjustified use of a manual call point), or if the fire brigade is called to the scene, the person who caused the fire or the triggering of the alarm system shall be liable to pay for the costs and damage within 5 working days of the notice thereof .We may not be held responsible for any valuables left on the museum premises, but we will keep the found objects for a limited period of time (3 months) in accordance with Section 5:59 of Act V of 2013 on the Civil Code.
CLOAKROOM
- For safety reasons the use of the cloakroom on the ground floor and/or the lockers next to the cafe near the main entrance is mandatory.
- Only shoulder bags of 30 cm (length) x 25 cm (heigth) x 15 cm (width) or smaller can be brought into the exhibition spaces. Coat may only be worn when it is on and dry, if you want to take it with you to exhibitions. Further, food, drink or anything that could endanger the artifact is prohibited! Food and drink are only permitted outside the exhibition spaces.
- All other personal items (e.g. backpack, umbrella, etc.) must be placed in the wardrobe! If you want to bring your smaller valuables into the exhibition space, you can borrow a small shoulder bag for this purpose at the cloakrooms or the information desk (at the main entrance) for free. After use, the bags must be returned to the place of collection (cloakroom or information desk).
- The use of the cloakroom and lockers is free of charge, but the latter can only be used with a 100 HUF coin (or 1 euro), which is returned to visitors when they pick up their luggage.
- Use of the cloakroom and lockers ic resserved to viditors with a ticket.
- Please note that the contents of bags in the museum area can be checked by the museum's security staff. The Museum undertakes no responsibility for the valuables placed in the lockers. Closed lockers are opened and emptied by the security staff after the museum closes.
SECURITY MEASURES, CAMERA SYSTEM
The exhibition halls and artefacts are guarded by hall guards with the assistance of armed security guards.
The museum is guarded by armed security guards operated by the NKÖV Nonprofit Kft., which operates in accordance with the provisions of Act CLIX of 1997 on the Armed Security Guard, the Nature Conservation and Field Guard Service (hereinafter referred to as „Act”) and the Decree 27/1998 (10 June) of the Ministry of the Interior on the bylaws of the Armed Security Guard, adopted for the implementation of the Act.
In order to ensure the security of the monument building, the artefacts, visitors and museum staff, a video camera surveillance and image recording system is in operation in the Main Building of the museum in accordance with the data protection legislation in force and Act CLIX of 1997 on the Armed Security Guard, Nature Conservation and Field Guard Service. The recordings are stored in the manner and for the period of time specified in the "Data Processing Regulations of the Camera Surveillance System of Hungarian National Museum Public Collection Centre Hungarian National Museum", which can be found on the Museum's website, and in the applicable laws.
By entering the museum building, the person entering the museum consents to being recorded by the security camera system and to the processing of these recordings and their personal data (image) contained therein by the Museum for security purposes for the minimum period necessary and in compliance with the rules on data protection.
The capacity of the museum's premises is limited, subject to the then prevailing fire regulations, and therefore, if the number of visitors to certain events reaches the maximum capacity, no more visitors will be allowed to enter the buildings ("full house"). Visitors who are not admitted to events with a full capacity cannot claim damages or other compensation, given that the reason for curtailing the maximum number of participating visitors is a legitimate security measure.
In the event of an emergency (e.g. natural disaster, fire, bomb threat, etc.), visitors must comply strictly with the instructions of museum staff and follow the instructions in the evacuation plan and leave the building when called upon to do so.
PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO RECORDING FOR PRIVATE USE BY VISITORS
Photography and video recording for private use is permitted in the museum building and exhibitions, with the exception of The coronation mantle exhibition on the first floor, where both activities are strictly prohibited! Visitors are not allowed to use flashlights, camera tripods or selfie sticks in the exhibition areas. Photographs may be used for personal use only and may not be commercially distributed. Photography and video recording for private use is free of charge, but subject to authorisation and fees in any other cases. Visitors must not disturb the visit of others while taking photographs and videos.

SMOKING
Smoking is prohibited on the entire the museum site and the use of electric cigarettes is not permitted. The provisions of Act XLII of 1999 on the protection of non-smokers and on certain rules for the consumption and distribution of tobacco products apply to the entire premisis of the Museum.
CONSEQUENCES OF BREACHING THE HOUSE RULES
The museum reserves the right to deny access to the museum to persons not complying with the House Rules of the Museum. Any visitor who violates these House Rules may, after a warning, be expelled from the premises for a definite period of time or permanently, or may be subject to official proceedings. Any damage resulting from a breach of these House Rules shall be the responsibility of the breaching person (or who is responsible for such breaching person). If the breach of the House Rules also constitutes a breach of the law, the breaching person (or who is responsible for such breaching person) shall be held liable and shall be subject to any legal sanctions.
