In May 2023, the Campona Victrix Archaeological Exhibition Centre opened its doors. It is a complex exhibition with spectacular artefacts, models, a stone gallery, a photo gallery, short films, spacious open-air spaces, informative descriptions and virtual reconstructions. The exhibition space offers an exciting insight into the turbulent history of the Roman fortress and settlement on the site of today's Nagytétény.
Everyone knows that the name of the shopping centre, famous for its Tropicarium, is not just a fancy name. The nearby Roman auxiliary camp on the Limes and the settlement built around it were called Campona. The name is probably not Latin, but of Pannonian origin, with the possible meaning 'settlement / countryside on the bend of the (Danube)'. It is also not well known that the camp was the site of a historic event of imperial importance in the 4th century AD, a victorious battle personally led by the Emperor Constantine I (the Great), which is preserved in Roman historical tradition. Our exhibition site is named Campona Victrix, or Campona the Victorious, in memory of the emperor's glorious victory and in honour of Campona, the patron and protecting goddess of the city.
