About:

The Wittelsbachs… a name sounding familiar. Reminding most people of Queen Elisabeth loved dearly by the Hungarians. But looking at the illustrious family-tree closer we may notice the multitude of links the Bavarian dynasty is related to Hungary. Probably the brightest star of this elaborate network is Queen Elisabeth, nicknamed Sisi within the family. Historical facts and imagination together raised her to the rank of the most beloved queen of the Hungarians who felt mostly at home among her favourite subjects. Her granddaughter, Archduchess Augusta ended up in Hungary by way of her marriage where she undertook several important tasks during the First World War in defence of the hinterland and of soldiers fighting at the front. The Archduchess’s uncle, Louis III king of Bavaria also acquired the Sárvár estate through marriage and with hard work and great expertise he turned the estate into a prosperous and profitable model farm. The 100th anniversary of the last king of Bavaria created an opportunity for the Hungarian National Museum to organize an exhibition to throw light on the relations of the Wittelsbach dynasty to Hungary.
