The Hungarian National Museum Public Collection Centre Hungarian National Museum and the Ludovika University of Public Service is organizing a two-day international conference on the protection of cultural heritage in crisis situations for the second time, on 25-26 November 2024 in the Hungarian National Museum's Ceremonial Hall (Budapest, Hungary).
The first day of the conference will focus on topics such as: what tools do different international organisations have to combat illicit trafficking of artefacts? What initiatives and experiences are available in cultural institutions in this field? What is the role of law enforcement agencies and international law enforcement cooperation in tackling the problem, and what are the best practices?
The second day of the conference – by inviting foreign and national experts – aims to contribute to enhancing cooperation between the cultural and defence and security sectors in the development of emergency preparedness and disaster response capabilities of public collections, providing an opportunity to network, exchange good practices and develop cooperation.
The conference will feature internationally renowned experts in each of the sub-themes, representatives of international organisations such as HUNOR, UNESCO, OSCE or UNODC, law enforcement and cultural institutions, as well as representatives of the national cultural and defence sector.
In face of the escalating global security landscape, public collections worldwide are exposed to a growing spectrum of threats. From the devastation of disasters to the deliberate targeting of cultural heritage in armed conflicts, coupled with the pervasive issue of illicit trafficking of cultural property, the preservation of these invaluable assets necessitates a comprehensive and collaborative approach. Effective prevention and mitigation of such risks demands a concerted effort involving diverse stakeholders and often transcends national borders. The conference builds on the growing international engagement in recent years and continues the dialogue started last year with conferences organised by the Museum on the topic.
The conference is open to participants from the cultural, defence, law enforcement, disaster management, administration and the humanitarian sector as well.
Participation is free but registration is required. Please click on the "Register" button on the top of the page to register!
