József Tóth (a.k.a. Füles) is one of the most colourful characters of Hungarian creative and public life. He was born in Budapest on 25 May 1940. He became interested in art during his high school years. Between 1960 and 1965, his caricatures were published by several newspapers. Meanwhile, between 1960-1962, he worked at MTI Foto as a trainee photographer. He regards Gyula Zacsek and József Németh as his masters. During his work on caricatures, he earned and kept a good sense of humour, as well as an eye for the grotesque and a surrealist point of view. He made good use of these skills in Hungarian commercial photography, born in the 1960s. Füles’s first commercial photograph was published in 1972: a calf’s head made of cottage cheese, its nostrils were tomato halves, its ears hot peppers, and its horns crescent-shaped bread pieces. Drawings and photographs supported each other in inciting viewers to buy the product. He became member of the Association of Hungarian Photographers as recognition for his work in renewing commercial photography. He started out successful thanks to his unusual ideas, thus he soon received a lot of requests, got several prizes, and his photographs were showcased at many major exhibitions. With the advancement of market economy, Füles changed his creative ways. He left the constant flux of commercials, and, from 1990, he has been making books. So far, he compiled 17 volumes treating the most various subjects: medieval temples, synagogues and bridges in Hungary; albums honouring the poetry of Petőfi or Radnóti; Hidden Budapest. A unique work in the history of Hungarian photography is Füles’s Portrait Gallery of Hungarian Photographers (1988; new edition: 2001). In it, he took photographs of his colleagues with particular respect, humility and incredible affectionate interest. The portraits are accompanied by a few personal thoughts, keeping visual and verbal humour. It was this collection that József Tóth donated to the Historical Photo Department of the Hungarian National Museum. Our present exhibition presents selected images from the book. During his diverse career, József Tóth has worked and still works in several fields, including news photography, applied photography, poster graphics, education and book publishing. Even at 80 years old, he keeps his joy, vitality and innovative thoughts in creation.
