Life at the museum

A genious musician, born in West-Bohemia in 1745, who was in the Austrian Army until 1775, was known as a timpani virtuoso, composed for leading ensembles of his time and conducted his own music at the festivities of the inauguration of Leopold II. His path went via Pressburg to Budapest, where he finally took the position of leader of the Harmony-music of the Hungarian Palatin Archduke Joseph from Habsburg, after being the musician of such influential aristocratic families as the Batthyány or the Grassalkovich. This musician, Georg Druschetzky connects all these important, music-lover noblemen, who were key personalities in the foundation of our museum, either by giving the parcel or some significant parts of their collections to the new-born Hungarian National Museum.

Druschetzky’s compositions are to be found in many libraries of central Europe, meaning he was in his time an esteemed musician. The Grundmann Quartet is playing manuscripts from the Széchényi National Library in Budapest, oboe quartets from Druschetzky, music full of humor, subtile, colorful, surprising and entertaining. Proving, that he is definitely a little genius, they won’t be afraid of comparing him with the giants of his time Bach, Mozart and Beethoven during the concert, where we can enjoy some music instruments from the 18th century also.

As a warming up, we cordially recommend you to  see around before the concert in our Baroque and 19th century exhibition rooms, where you can admire not only the baryton of Miklós Esterházy, a contemporaneous music-fanatic aristocrat, but the pianoforte of Ludwig van Beethoven or the young Mozart’s clavicord also, next to the pelisse of Archduke Joseph the Palatin and the charming coffee set of count Antal Grassalkovich, given by Maria Theresia.

Free concert, entrance with the museum-ticket.
