The Historical Archive collects and organises documents generated in the course of archiving activities of the museum’s historical collections. The Archive is an auxiliary museum collection that serves as a repository of information related to objects held by the museum. It documents the circumstances under which artefacts from the historical collections entered the institution, making it possible to trace the provenance of bequests and other related groups of objects.

The Historical Archive also preserves the complete archive of the Museum of Modern History (formerly the Labour Movement Museum), which has since been merged into the Hungarian National Museum. In addition, it holds archival materials relating to the history of the museum itself, as well as documentation from former exhibitions and visitor guest books.

The photographic collection of the Historical Repository comprises approximately 15,000 analogue photographs documenting the exhibitions and collections of the Museum of Modern History. These photographic materials can be searched locally using inventory books.
